Chapter 17

The puzzle pieces were starting to click into place in Jack's mind. It could explain so much, including the mystery woman who’d told him to back off. “I think you’re onto something ladies and I now need to ask you to please be even more careful. You might just be a bit too observant for your own safety. Speak of this to no one. Pretend you know and see nothing.” If what he suspected was right, this wasn’t over just yet. Someone was cleaning house.

“Do you think we’re in any real danger? We never interacted with any of the people who’ve been killed.” Sarah asked, her mind spinning. She really needed to get Callie trained on how to handle that gun, just to be safe.

“We don’t know if Frank is involved and who’s actually done the killings so, yes, we need to be careful.” Callie was the one to answer, her mind rapidly filtering through everything. “Jack, why don’t you download the camera app on your phone so you can have eyes in the area? You have my permission.”

Jack gave her a sheepish grin, “I already did, when I helped you set it up.”

“I know you did, but you might find it isn’t working.” Callie waited for him to pull up the feed.

“What the hell?” It had worked yesterday when he’d tried it.

Handing him a sticky note she smiled. “I wasn’t happy with the simple password and reset it, here’s the new one.”

“This isn’t a password, it’s a damn encryption sequence.” He grumbled as he began typing it in. He had to hand it to her though, the likelihood of anyone cracking it was extremely slim.

“Now, the main rule is that you don’t use it to spy on us. Stick to what you need to see and behave yourself.” Sarah spoke up, knowing full well he might be tempted to watch Callie remotely. When he gave her a wounded, innocent look she knew she’d been right.

“Don’t worry Sarah, he’d soon die of boredom if he tried to watch us.” Callie chuckled, missing the mischievous gleam in his eyes when he glanced at her.

“Well ladies, it’s getting late and I need to get back to the office. Thank you for all of your help, I think we may be on to a good lead here.” He’d taken pictures of all the pages they’d shown him so his team could cross-check everything. He knew they were probably close anyway but the women had given him some fresh insight and a chance to bounce around ideas.

“I know I don’t need to say it but humor me please, lock the doors and stay inside.” Jack said, suppressing a smile as they both rolled their eyes at him. Taking Callie's hand he pulled her towards the front door. “Callie, I just wanted to say I’m truly sorry for what happened earlier. I didn’t mean to upset you.”

Callie had tensed up when he’d pulled her aside, sure he was going to scold her for something. When he apologized she let out a breath she hadn’t even realized she’d been holding.
